“I decided to enrol at SERC after going to an open night and seeing the workshop and the different tasks I would be carrying out during the apprenticeship. I had the chance to talk to the tutors and ask them questions which sold me on the course and its many benefits. I started the level 2 Apprenticeship in September 2020, and have since gone on to start my Level 3 in September 2022.”

"My favourite part of being on the apprenticeship has been learning new skills. I am employed with A Reid & Son and have really enjoyed doing practical work and receiving on-site training which is giving me a lot of experience in this industry. It is good to work alongside other employees who are familiar with carpentry and joinery, and who I can get advice from if I need any help. The apprenticeship suits me because I prefer the blend of learning on campus one day a week, while spending the rest of the week with my employer gaining practical skills. Having a wage coming in to help pay the bills is also a big advantage.”

“I think the standard of learning at SERC is great, and being taught by experts who know the trade makes me assured that I am on the right track. The tutors at SERC are easy going and treat you like an adult, which is something I like about coming on to campus. I would definitely encourage anyone who is interested in this trade to consider the apprenticeship route; it has been a good decision for me and certainly suits my way of learning.”

“After I finish my apprenticeship, I would like to work towards becoming self-employed. I like the idea of having my own company and managing my own jobs, and SERC has definitely been a great start to help make this happen.”
