The tradition of the postcard dates back to 1830 when it is believed the very first hand-painted card was sent, complete with a Penny Black postage stamp. The holiday picture postcards that we know today followed a few years later - quite the thing to do from the post office in the newly built Eiffel Tower at the Paris Exhibition of 1889.
Sadly, the digital age has seen the demise of the post card and coronavirus meant that few of us found a postcard on our hall mat during the summer 2020. Happily, this was not if you are studying hospitality and catering at SERC’s Downpatrick Campus. Over the summer, lecturer Thomas Turley, sent a little message of support to students in the form of the well-loved postcard, featuring students Athicha Rafferty, from Downpatrick, and Conor Burns, from Bryansford, (pictured above prior to social distancing regulations) who have progress to the Level 3 Professional Cookery and, of course, some mouth-watering images of delicious dishes that the team bring to perfection as part of their training.
We wonder if Chef Turley has started a new tradition at SERC?
