Our very best wishes BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Applied Science students, Johnny McQuillan (Glenavy), Paul French (Lisburn) and Martin McKeown (Moira) who will be pitching at the Semi-Finals of Invent 2020 on Friday 5 June.
The trio who are studying at SERC’s Lisburn Campus are all past pupils of St Patrick’s Academy, Lisburn. They have designed and prototyped a low-cost, low-tech solution to the problem of water contaminated by nitrates and phosphates. Their solution is a physical and chemical filter which removes 90% of nitrates from polluted water and a high level of phosphates. The by-product of the chemical reaction, calcium nitrate, can be used as a fertiliser for soil.
Known as The Water Boys, the young men will be presenting a 3 minute pitch, live over Zoom to a panel of four judges from industry and education. This will be followed by five minutes of questions.
The team are amongst 18 semi-finalists, whittled down from 100 applicants, for the competition this year. There are six categories in total with three teams in each – The Water Boys are in the Agri-Science category.
