Video: Learn More about SERC's Foundation Learning Course

The Foundation Learning students at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) have helped to create a video to promote the course. The college annually welcomes possible new students into our campuses so they can see our facilities and learn more about Foundation Learning, however due to the pandemic this has not been possible this year, so the students have created the video to showcase their course.

Speaking about the video Laura Flynn, Foundation Learning year 1 coordinator said "This time of year we'd usually have 'taster sessions' where potential students and school groups come and get involved in the course. This visual, hands on experience is so beneficial to aid transition, reduce anxieties and boost confidence. As this couldn't happen this year we thought a video could be the next best way we could showcase what we do on the course."

Talking about the creation of the video and the students' involvement Laura said "We wanted the video to be fun yet informative. Each class was allocated an element of the content then they brainstormed ideas for the delivery of this. Year 2B worked hard scripting their 'support' section during their Theatre Appreciation Skills sessions for their Duke of Edinburgh/President's Award. They drew on popular culture and included a 'filter fail', a blooper reel and even a line from TV show 'Line of Duty' in their very funny Zoom meeting! Year 1 wanted to show how they've coped in the last year in the form of a fun rap, so they worked hard rhyming verses and adding moves and props. Year 2A brilliantly got the course details across in the style of a Mastermind quiz show. The Advanced group shared their memories of the last 3 years in discussion, then worked together to format this into a spoken poem."

Laura concluded "All students showed such amazing commitment to the planning process, the rehearsals and the filming. They supported each other throughout and performed so brilliantly. They definitely showed just what a talented group they are and we are unbelievably proud of them all. We really hope that this video encourages people to apply for Foundation Learning at SERC."

Foundation Learning is for students with moderate to severe special educational needs and aims to assist in providing students with the skills that are required to support them in employment and to improve and develop their own personal skills.
