James Rowley, SERC Advanced Foundation Learning student, Newtownards Campus, came runner up in the Anti-Bullying Week 2020 Creative Arts Competition, Special Merit Category.

James’ submission was his poem ‘My Shadow’, which he recorded himself reciting on camera. James comments, “I am very proud of myself that someone enjoyed my work. Having a disability, myself and being different from everyone else, I suffered bullying in school, and I wanted people to know that you can overcome it and be a stronger person.”

Laura Flynn, SERC Associate Lecturer in Employability & Personal Skills, School of Construction, Engineering Services and Skills for Work, says, “During Anti Bullying week James worked extremely hard on this piece. He chose to submit a video entry so that he could best get across the emotion of his words and he found the confidence to do this. He did a remarkable job. I am so happy that this beautifully written and delivered poem was recognised by the NIABF. We are all so proud of James.”

Due to the pandemic, the awards event will be replaced with a celebration video of prize-winners pieces and this will be sent out, along with an assembly presentation, to all prize-winning schools.
