Summer Ferguson, 22, Lisburn, has found that the opportunity to apply practical skills is helping her lay the right foundation for university whilst studying Mechatronic Engineering at SERC.

Summer, who studied A Levels at Hunter House College decided progression to SERC was the right place for her to unlock her future, after attending an Open Day and talking to tutors about the range of programmes on offer at the College.  Following successful completion of the BTEC Level 3 Manufacturing Engineering, she has progressed on to the Foundation Degree in Mechatronic Engineering at SERC’s Lisburn Campus.

Speaking about her Mechatronic Engineering course she said, “I particularly enjoy the practical aspect of my course and the opportunity to use all the amazing technology and equipment we have on campus. I have found studying engineering at SERC allows you to put the skills you’re learning into practice, whether it is the CNC machines or equipment in the specialist workshops or the resources in class such as the robots.   For me, it is the best mix of theory and practice that is helping me progress to university and a career in Engineering.”

“My lecturers have been great and have been willing to help at any time. As a young mum, I have found them supportive and understanding of my personal circumstances and of the juggling involved with family life and studying.”

She added, “Over the period when we were learning from home they went above and beyond to ensure that we all understood the information we were given and even did personal classes with me.  My experience at SERC has been great and I would recommend coming to the College to anyone.  It’s a great learning environment where everyone is supported on their own personal educational journey.”

Find out how you can unlock your future at our Open Evening for Higher Education on Wednesday 17 November, 4.00 – 7.00pm at the College’s Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses.
