Students take part in Ulster Wildlife’s Grassroots Challenge Programme

South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Life Skills students from the Newtownards Campus have been working with Ulster Wildlife’s Grassroots Challenge programme on a series of eight workshops aimed at connecting young people with their local environment and wildlife.

Throughout the programme, students have had the opportunity to learn more about native wildlife, constructed bird boxes and feeders to add to the wildlife safety zone they have developed to protect and preserve wildlife at the College’s Newtownards campus. 

Ann Grills, SERC Life Skills Lecturer said, “We are delighted to be involved in the Ulster Wildlife’s Grassroots Challenge and the students have working hard to make their campus a more wildlife friendly space by turning a small area of lawn into a wildlife haven fit for hedgehogs, birds, bats and other indigenous species. We are also planning to grow some vegetables in raised beds.”

Christine Chambers, from Ulster Wildlife, said, “Helping young people make a difference to their local environment is what the Grassroots Challenge is all about, so it’s been fantastic to see the SERC students unleash their passion, skills and creativity to green-up their campus. A huge well done to everyone involved - they should be very proud of themselves.”
