Students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) recently took part in a competition organised by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council (LCCC), to celebrate European Week for Waste Reduction.
SERC Level 3 Art & Design students, Foundation Learning and Skills for Life and Work students created art pieces using waste textiles as part of the competition. The art pieces the students created were showcased to the public in an exhibition at the Island Art Centre in Lisburn by LCCC. Winners were announced at SERC Lisburn Campus Learning Resource Centre (LRC) in December by LCCC. The winning student groups received cash prizes, generously donated by Cookstown Textile Recyclers and merchandise provided by LCCC.
SERC Senior Innovation Advisor, Rachel Innes comments: “This is our third year collaborating with LCCC to encourage students to get involved with European Waste Week for Waste Reduction, to highlight the environmental impact of waste, particularly in the textile industry. The competition allowed students to be rewarded for their hard work, and links well with curriculum courses and Project Based Learning, creating pieces that can highlight college themes, of which sustainability has been a key feature for 2024.”
Councillor Gary Hynds, LCCC Environment and Sustainability Vice-Chair said: ‘I was very impressed with the talent and creativity shown by the students. Their artwork thoughtfully explores the environmental impact of the textile industry, encouraging us all to reflect on our choices and take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future."
The student's art will be exhibited for all to see in the SERC Lisburn LRC up until the end of January.
