With many of us thinking ahead to when we may be able to travel, it is a great time to start preparations by learning a bit of language for your chosen destination.   And if you are planning a trip to France, Spain or Italy then you might want to check out the short 12-week programmes on offer at SERC starting online week commencing 15 March 2021.

Bangor woman Margaret Ainsworth found that taking steps to improve her holiday Spanish gave her the confidence to get off the tourist track when visiting the region.  Retired teacher Margaret said, “When my daughter moved near Malaga in Spain, I realised that I would enjoy my visits so much more if I had a little bit of Spanish, as there was plenty of time for me to explore when she was at work.

Margaret added, “If you stay on the tourist trail, most people speak English but if you want to experience the real culture of the towns and cities, a little of the local language means you have a more enriching experience by learning to ask for directions, understand the menu, place an order for food or simply ask for your coffee just the way you like it.   I found that when I had a smile on my face, knew how to say please and thank you, people were delighted with your efforts.

Margaret was keen to add that she didn’t have any special predisposition to learning a language.   She said, “I tried learning languages at school but didn’t take it seriously.    I started off with Holiday Spanish and have progressed to Spanish 1 at SERC and I think that’s because it has given me the confidence to speak the language.   The classes were a nice way to meet people too and although I do miss seeing everyone, I still look forward to the class online.
