Northern Ireland women recently made history as for the first time the Green and White Army’s women’s team have qualified for a major tournament and will be competing in the European Championships next year.

NI were considered underdogs when they took on Ukraine in the qualifying play-offs. However, they defied the odds and triumphed with a 4-1 aggregate win against a side placed 25 places above them in the world rankings.

A night that will live long in the memories of each of the players and their fans featured SERC’s own Rebecca McKenna. Rebecca, at only 20, is one of the younger players in the side.

Speaking about Rebecca and the achievement Colin Atkinson, Deputy Head of School of Applied Science, Sport and Access to Education said “It’s a fantastic achievement for everyone involved. We’re especially proud of Rebecca, and her dedication to her sport, it’s a well-deserved accomplishment, hopefully one of many great moments in her young career. Rebecca is a wonderful ambassador to sport, women's football and South Eastern Regional College. Hopefully she and the rest of the Northern Ireland team have inspired a future generation of footballers."

Here’s Rebecca speaking prior to the second leg game against Ukraine.
