Open Day at South Eastern Regional College are at the touch of a button this year after lecturing and support staff geared up to deliver a series of webinars for prospective students considering their options for further study and training.
Open Days at SERC are a major date in the College’s calendar and this year is no different. Lecturing and support staff have been working since early in the lockdown period to ensure that SERC is online and open for business and that included continuing to deliver information and support for prospective students to help them research their options, plan ahead and make informed choices about their future.
The online open days started on 27 May and continue until 4 June.
Phillip McKelvey, Lecturer and Course Coordinator for the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Sport said, “I am really delighted with how our webinar was received, with almost 20 attendees, it was an opportunity for us to give an oversight of the course and answer any questions live during the session.
He added, “Life will move to a new normal after lockdown, and what that looks like no one knows yet, but what we do know is our young people will need to equip themselves for further study and employment so we are encouraging young people to talk to the lecturing and the support staff at SERC, including our careers advisors if they are undecided, to make sure they are in a position to make decisions when they get examination results. The message from SERC is that we are online and open for business and students should apply now for any of the courses they are interested in securing a place for September intake.”
Alex Patterson, from Millisle said, “I am currently completing Level 3 in Sport at the College’s Bangor Campus and looking at my options for September. I met with Louise, one of the careers advisors here at SERC to discussion my options. She recommended I attend some of the open day webinars so I booked onto the one for the Foundation Degree in Sport, Coaching and Fitness which was very useful. It gave me a better idea of what the course is all about, plus there was the opportunity to ask questions. I have applied for it and a business studies course and will probably look at another, as I want to keep my options open.”
SERC offers courses from Level 1 through to Level 6 covering subjects from health and social care to animal care, applied science to manufacturing engineering, public services to food and beverage service, IT to music technology.
SERC’s Virtual Open Day webinar sessions cover Higher Education, Higher Level Apprenticeships, Further Education, Training and Apprenticeships. A selection of recorded sessions will be available on the SERC website for prospective students who wish to view.
