Charlotte Neill (22) from Bangor is on course for a career in the IT industry, her journey to that career has been through SERC. Charlotte came to SERC after studying her GCSE’s at Glenlola Collegiate School, she achieved level 2 and 3 IT qualifications on her way to her current enrolment as a Higher-Level Apprentice through the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Computing.

Charlotte spoke about her decision to choose an HLA over other higher education options. “I chose an apprenticeship as I thought it was a great opportunity to earn while I learn. I wanted to get into work as soon as possible, and an apprenticeship allowed me to do this while continuing with my education.”

Charlotte’s apprenticeship is within the technology department of FinTrU, a financial services company that provide resources to global investment banks. “I am currently in a learning rotation at work, cycling through the different parts of the technology department with other apprentices, focusing on software development. Right now I am in the QA rotation, so day to day I am mostly testing software looking for bugs.”

She continued “I am really enjoying how hands-on the apprenticeship is, I feel I am learning at a faster pace outside of the classroom. I am also enjoying working with professionals in the IT industry - everyone I have worked with has been very helpful and furthered my interest in software development.”

Speaking about her time in the college so far Charlotte said “I have been at SERC Bangor for a number of years now and have really enjoyed my experience. I particularly enjoyed collaborating with classmates, and I have made great friends with other students I have met on my courses.

“The tutors I have had over the years have been helpful and I have enjoyed working with them. They really care about their students and you can tell they want their students to succeed, it’s been a great environment to learn in.”
