NRC hosted the event on 26 May on behalf of the Entrepreneurship Hub – a hub which all six Further Education Colleges competed in to promote PBL and entrepreneurial business. SERC submitted one project in each of the four competition categories: ‘Innovation’, ‘Entrepreneurialism’, ‘Sustainability’, and ‘Social Impact’. Participating students were tasked with preparing a five minute presentation in front of a judging panel of Entrepreneurship Hub members and industry experts. Students were marked on their presentation and communication skills.

SERC students performed exceptionally, winning two out of the four categories and claiming the overall College victory. Congratulations to all the students involved in the following SERC PBL projects who competed in the competition: Future Focus Technology (Winner in the Innovation category); SERC Community Garden (Winner in the Sustainability category); D7 Designs (finalist in the Entrepreneurial category) and STEM Launchers (finalist in the Social Impact category).

Speaking about her success in the competition, Access Level 3 Diploma in Foundation Studies student Vikki Pinkerton of the SERC Community Garden Project said, “I'm delighted to have won the sustainability category. The Enterprise Team's knowledge and support have been invaluable throughout the project, helping me grow my skills and confidence. I can't wait to see the project completed and to witness the staff and students enjoy it. The students' creativity, enthusiasm and effort across all categories were truly inspiring. Congratulations to all the finalists!”

Level 3 National Extended Diploma in IT student Finley Houston of Future Focus Technology comments, “I really enjoyed the event. During the event I found myself talking with students involved in other projects; it was fun getting to talk with new people and to show off the projects that we've been working on. Overall, I had a really good experience there and I'm super glad I went.”

Lizzie Buick, SERC Deputy Head of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship comments, “The success of winning two categories and the overall College Award for 2023 is testament to the dedication of the student companies and the unwavering support from the Enterprise and Curriculum teams. This is an incredible accolade for all students involved”.
