SERC Trio Heading to Country Range Finals

South Eastern Regional College (SERC) students Adam Jones (Dunmurry) Matthew McGivern (Lisburn) and Adam Proctor (Dromore) have progressed to the finals of the Country Range Student Chef Challenge 2019/20.
The trio are all Level 3 students. Adam Jones is a catering apprentice, while team-mates Matthew McGivern and Adam Proctor study NVQ Patisserie and Confectionary.
The student’s knowledge of both classical and modern cooking methods was tested, and they displayed excellent knowledge, skills and ability, remaining calm in the heat of the semi-finals. Team SERC came second to City of Glasgow College earning a well-deserved qualification to the competitions final in London on March 3.
Ian Thompson, SERC Lecturer- School of Hospitality, Management, Tourism and Languages, who is heading SERC’s involvement in the competition, said, “The group gained valuable experience, which will develop key character traits and skills, such as overcoming adversity, working under pressure, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings and taking criticism on board to make the necessary changes for further development.”
He added “The team have had to make a few changes based on the facilities available for the final and have adapted the menu to reflect the judges feedback. They are looking forward to the challenge of theatre cooking In London in front of a live audience and a panel of judges.”
