SERC student Laura Barr, 34, Newcastle, and past SERC student Robin Cordiner, 48, Ballyboley, have won 3rd and 2nd places respectively at a short filmmaking competition organised by Newcastle Community Cinema and Fibrus.

Laura is currently enrolled on the HNC in Creative Media Production with NI Film and Television School (NIFTS) at Bangor SERC. She is a Mum of three and a Journalist. Laura’s film ‘Dreams’ won her 3rd place in the competition. ‘Dreams’ is a magical tale of a young girl (played by Laura’s daughter Charlotte) and her passion for Irish Dancing, which sees her battling the elements to make her dreams come true.

On winning 3rd place, Laura said, “I was absolutely delighted to learn that I had earned third place in the NCC short filmmaking competition. Charlotte really loved being a part of it and she is looking forward to the new year when NCC are showing all the shortlisted seven on the big screen. I would also like to add a word of thanks to all the NI Film School teachers who are such a great support to all the students on the course, both with class projects and our own outside projects. It is great to be among so many creatively talented individuals within the class, all of whom are such a fantastic support to one another.”

Robin is a professional photographer and graduated from the HNC in Creative Media Production with NIFTS in June 2019 at SERC. Robin's film ‘Danny Buoy’ got 2nd place in the competition. ‘Danny Buoy’ is a documentary about how the Dundrum villagers built Danny Buoy, a St Ayles Skiff, to reconnect with the sea and also launch the winning Dundrum Coastal Rowing Club.

Robin comments, “I was thrilled to win second place in this competition as it is nice to get validation of your work once in a while. I have just bought a new camera and this award will help financially to purchase some much-needed accessories. I am looking forward to producing more content in the future.”
