A young sports-mad hockey player has been accepted onto the Young Leaders Volunteer Programme through Disability Sport NI.

Daisy Boast, (18), a student on the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports and Outdoor Activities at SERC’s Bangor Campus, has a severe hearing impairment. Daisy said, “I’m hearing impaired and have worn hearing aids since I was 3 years old. I am severely impaired in my right ear and profoundly in my left ear.   You wouldn’t know this to look at me unless you saw my hearing aids.  My hearing impairment has never held me back from what I want to do, especially in sport, so I think this gives me a personal insight into involving people with a disability in sport.”

She added, “I am looking forward to gaining the knowledge and practical skills required to successfully include people with disabilities in sport and recreation.   The programme will cover topics such as UK Disability Inclusion Training, Sight Loss in Sport, Inclusive Skills and Games and Wheelchair Skills for Sport.”

The young lady who previously played hockey for Pegasus Hockey Club in Belfast now represents Bangor Hockey Club’s 2nd XI team concluded, “I will also be supported to find a long-term volunteering opportunity in my local community that best matches my skill set and interests.   O.verall, I think the Young Leaders Volunteer Programme is a win-win for everyone, given all the benefits inclusive sport can bring to all involved.”
