serc student out litter picking in Lisburn

SERC students from Foundation Learning and Skills for Life along with lecturers, teaching assistants and Enterprise Team staff took part in a litter pick in Lisburn recently, making big improvements to the look of the local area.

Working collaboratively with Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council (LCCC), SERC’s eco-conscious team went to clear up the Lisburn Lagan Tow Path area of any litter. The partnership opportunity occurred, as LCCC wanted to promote a new water quality project that is being launched while SERC Enterprise Entrepreneurship and Environment team wanted to create an opportunity for its many eco-conscious students to improve the local environment.

As a result of the teams incredible work, a total of six bin bags worth of litter was collected from both sides of a section of the Lagan Tow Path, starting from the Island Civic Centre and running to the children’s play park.

Stefanie Campbell SERC Deputy Head of Enterprise said “We were thrilled to engage with the local council and our SERC students to contribute to the local community through the litter pick. Our student-led eco-committees in the college are testament to the commitment SERC has, to developing green initiatives. It was great to see so many enthusiastic young people passionate about the environment taking real steps to make a difference”

Ben Hayward, student of Foundation Learning at SERC Lisburn campus and avid environmentalist said “I volunteered with the SERC Eco Committee who partnered with Lisburn Castlereagh Council to carry out a litter pick along the Lagan towpath. I was really shocked and saddened at the amount of litter and dog litter bags left behind by the public. Luckily, we filled a lot of bin bags and did a great job of leaving the towpath much cleaner. I hope in the future members of the public will use the Lisburn Castlereagh Council bins provided and will support the effort to protect the environment.”
