A group of 18 South Eastern Regional College (SERC) sports students recently jetted across to Fuerteventura to participate in a sports work placement, fully funded by the Turing Scheme.

The group featured Rebekah Baxter, Matus Jurina, Camron Nyoka, Matthew Hull, Katie Brown, Matthew Dines, Jake Vaughan, Jasmine Bell, Dylan Small, Daniel Playfair, Jayden Lucas, Faye Cantley, Gerard McAuley, Benjamin Morrow, Rhys Bailey, Christopher Sinclair, Oliver Bell and Sophie Edwards.

The students had the opportunity to develop and further their skills and knowledge in a range of areas key to development and training within the sports, coaching and fitness industry. These included observing qualified coaches; assisting coaches to deliver sessions; teaching relevant skills, tactics and techniques; monitoring participation and performance and providing encouragement and constructive feedback; assisting with sports promotion of handball; fitness testing; administering tests; and recording performance.

The group had a wonderful time and all students reported that the placement gave them a good idea of what it is like to work in the sports industry. The students said that the trip helped broaden their horizons and showed that there are many opportunities outside Northern Ireland in their chosen career field.  Many said it reaffirmed their desire to work in the industry, and increased their motivation.

The Turing Scheme provides funding for students and accompanying staff to undertake a study or work placement across the world. This is a life-changing experience for SERC students, giving them a unique opportunity to gain vital international experience, improving their technical skills and their employability or T-Skills. Students also improve their language skills and gain a better understanding of other global cultures and work practices. The Turing Scheme contributes to the UK Government’s commitment to a Global Britain, by helping organisations such as SERC to enhance our existing international links and forge new relationships. The delivery partner for the Turing Scheme is Capita working on behalf of the Department for Education.
