The BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2022 is set to take place on 12 – 14 January 2022 and SERC is keen to see similar success as in past years, with SERC Level 3 Applied Science student Harrison Nesbitt qualifying for the finals.

For the 2022 competition, SERC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science student Harrison Nesbitt (Bangor), is hopeful to uphold the hard work and innovation that SERC students have demonstrated in past years. Harrison’s project is investigating local water hardness and its connection to human health. He has begun an in-depth literature review on the subject area. He will then progress onto practical work, analysis of results and finally an evaluation. Harrison aims to create a water hardness map once his investigation is complete.

Jonathan Cash, SERC Applied Science, Sport and Access to Education Curriculum Manager, comments, “Harrison is a hardworking and dedicated student, he showed great initiative and autonomy to come up with his project investigating local water hardness and its connection to human health. We feel the project would be a great addition to the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition and we wish him the very best of luck with his application. The project directly links into his programme of study and will provide a range of assessment evidence further highting the vocational skills building approach of Science at SERC.”

In the 2021 BT Young Scientist Competition, Sara Hamilton, SERC BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science student, flew the flag for SERC in the finals of the competition. Sara’s project investigated the link between Cardiovascular Disease and individuals’ weight, competing in the Biological and Ecological Individual Senior Project category.

In the 2020 BT Young Scientist Competition, SERC Level 3 Applied Science  students Ben Gibson, Jamel Donald and Caoimhe Clugston were awarded First Place in the Biological and Ecological Sciences Senior Group category for their investigation which looked at whether cigarette smoke extract will cause an increase in inflammatory markers and glucose within the cells.   The team were also awarded Northern Ireland Best Project.

The finals take place in January (12th-14th) 2022, on behalf of SERC we wish Harrison the best of luck.
