For many young students, taking that next step in education after completing GCSE’s can be scary, especially when results aren’t what you expected and plans change.

That was the case for Carragh Nelson (19) from Lisburn; however, Carragh turned to SERC and never looked back.

“My teachers and careers advisors in school gave me different options. Originally the plan was to come back and do lower and upper 6th but I didn’t meet the grades for that, so my backup was SERC and to be honest I think it was the better option it has shaped me into a more independent student and overall, just worked out better for me.”

Carragh originally joined the college in 2019 enrolling on the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport, and after excelling and achieving good grades, Carragh progressed to Higher Education at SERC and the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Sport, Coaching and Fitness.

Speaking about her time at the college Carragh said “I really enjoy practical sessions, I love hands on lessons and getting involved, just having fun. Overall I have enjoyed my time at SERC -  it is a lovely campus with very helpful staff and tutors for all different courses.

“My tutors and lecturers throughout my time at SERC have all been amazing, they go above and beyond to help and always give the right level of encouragement to make sure I am meeting deadlines and submitting work on time. I honestly wouldn’t have made it properly without them.”

Carragh concluded by talking about her future ambitions: “After completing the foundation degree I would like to continue my studies and top up to a full degree, and then I want to get my PGCE as my overall goal is to become a PE teacher.”
