Deborah Carson (30) from Downpatrick came to SERC after an eight year break from education. Originally studying Access at the Downpatrick Campus, Deborah went onto study and complete the Foundation Degree in Early Childhood studies at SERC Lisburn.

Deborah spoke about her return to education and her time at the college, “A friend had recommended the Access course to me as a way to get into University, so I went along to an open day, and signed up for the course.

“The Access Course was interesting and a great way to set me up for University. The Foundation Degree was also full of interesting modules surrounding Early Childhood and practical experiences in placements encouraged me to work hard for my dream job.”

She then spoke about how SERC helped her and how for the first time she enjoyed her education, “Having found out I was dyslexic at the later age of 18, I received learning support when I began studying with SERC. This support has been invaluable, knowing that I have support and equipment to help me with my dyslexia has encouraged me to do well. For the first time in my life, I am enjoying my learning experiences and feel confident in my education.”

Deborah concluded “After my Foundation Degree I hope to study the full degree at university and then go on to do a PGCE. I would like to teach children with additional needs.

“I would recommend SERC to anyone; the college has a variety of courses and higher education options available to enable you to develop your education and find a career suitable for you.”
