Young Chef Michael Thompson celebrates his gold medal at IFEX

SERC Hospitality and Catering tutors and students are celebrating a hugely successful week at IFEX, the prestigious showcase of the latest Northern Ireland food and drink products and services to the food, retail and hospitality industries. It’s also the occasion for students and lecturers from around Northern Ireland to test their skills against one another in competition, and SERC representatives have done the college proud.

There were three gold medal winners for SERC last week: Michael Thompson (pictured), who is studying a Professional Chef Traineeship at SERC Bangor Campus, won in the Riso Gallo Risotto contest; Yehor Chukhil from Killinchy, who is studying the Level 2 Diploma Professional Chef, won for his chicken dish in the junior skills section; and tutor Ruth Doherty took the top slot in the Senior Section of the Edible Art competition with her “Bridal Bouquet” creation.

In total, the SERC team brought home three gold medals, four silver medals, seven bronze and four certificates of merit.

Other winning SERC students were Taylor Pietersen, Carly Buchanan, Naomi Fox and Louis McClelland (silver medallists); Evangeline Johnston, Wilma Mavindidze, Gabby Harrison, Roisin Walsh and Gemma Diamond (bronze medallists) and Richard Vohar, Ben Fleming, Kenzie McClelland, and Chloe Luxton who as a team were awarded bronze in the Intercollege Cook and Serve challenge. Michael Thompson added a bronze medal to his gold win.   Certificates of merit were awarded to Gabby Harrison, Seraphina Willis, Amy O’Neill and Faye McGrogan.

Well done to all those from SERC who took part – everyone was a real credit to the college.
