What is this?

As of this month the College Harassment Policy will be changing its name to ‘Dignity at Work’. Our existing policy will mainly remain unchanged, but this new title reflects the Colleges’ commitment in working together to ensure a harmonious and inclusive working environment.

SERC’s promise

The College promotes equality of opportunity and fair participation, where every employee is treated with respect and dignity and in which no employee feels threatened. We ensure that any discrimination or victimisation whilst working at SERC is unlawful and unacceptable, confirming that any discrimination or victimisation carried out by staff or others will be vigorously opposed and addressed.

Means of redress

  • Informal – when a staff member simply wants the behaviour to stop or not be repeated, they can approach the alleged harasser directly and make known the unwanted behaviour. This can be with the support or carried out on the staff members behalf from their manager/ senior manager, colleague, TU rep or Dignity at Work Advisors.
  • Formal – if the informal stage is not considered appropriate, or if the harassment continues.

This October, the College are Introducing Dignity at Work Advisors – the following 5 staff have been trained as the College Dignity At Work Advisors:

  • Claire Williamson (Secretary to the Governing Body)
  • Charlie Curley (Training Support Officer)
  • Colum Toner (Lecturer in Travel and Tourism Operation)
  • Lesley Bratty (Lecturer in Computing)
  • Tom Trainor (Technical Support Officer)

The Dignity at Work Advisors role is twofold, to actively encourage and promote dignity at work, act quickly on any disclosures and/or signs for breaches, and secondly to assist in the early resolution of conflict and to guide staff through the College’s procedure, which is available to all staff on the learning engine.
