SERC’s Entrepreneur Club have been shortlisted for Smarter Working Live; a leading awards event for the public sector. In partnership with the Civil Service Working Programme, Smarter Working Live seeks to recognise significant achievements by organisations, individuals and teams in contributing to positive changes. SERC’s Entrepreneur Club has been successful in being shortlisted for the ‘Small-scale, big impact’ category, with a ceremony commencing at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester on 23rd March.

Lizzie Buick, Deputy Head of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship commented:

“I am absolutely delighted that SERC’s Entrepreneur Club has received recognition in being shortlisted for the Smarter Working Live Award in the ‘Small-scale, big impact’ category. The Entrepreneur Club was first established in 2018 with the role of supporting students in developing their enterprise and entrepreneurial skills. Since then, we have been thrilled to generate 115 viable student companies due to the team’s facilitation and mentoring; providing students with skills to help them become work-ready enterprising college leavers, many of whom finish their studies owning thriving businesses.”

“Research from Stranmillis University comprised evidence from 4,000 SERC students and 46% of the SERC staff population, which demonstrated the benefit of the Entrepreneur Club across all transversal skills categories, with improvement recorded in 55 out of 56 component areas. Staff also reported increased enjoyment of teaching and improved efficiency of student learning.”

“The research also identified that 19% of SERC students were interested in setting up their own companies, which there was over three times the Northern Ireland average of 5% of the population setting up businesses. Through the work of the Entrepreneur Club, SERC produces more entrepreneurs than the region’s average, which amplifies the importance of this work in the college and community.”
