South Eastern Regional College (SERC) offer a Managed Learning Programme (MLP) for the installation and maintenance of commercial kitchens such as those you would see in hospitals or schools.
SERC’s Business Services Deputy Business Manager Stephen McGreevy said, “Commercial kitchens require a different skill set for their installation and maintenance. Up until late 2019 there was no training programme available in Northern Ireland/Ireland for any potential new entrant into this industry.
“Ce-Tech as a market leader in this area, contacted SERC to open discussions on the potential of Commercial Catering Training being a viable venture for us to deliver, they were continually frustrated trying to get new employees into their industry - as they had nowhere to learn or train.
He added “We assessed their needs as an employer then set about designing and matching their learning needs to a new bespoke Commercial Catering MLP which would allow new entrants to enter the Commercial Catering industry and become highly trained employees.
“As part of this collaborative joint venture Ce-Tech furnished SERC with state of the art commercial catering appliances, the types used in top hotel's by professional chefs, and these are installed at our Nutts Corner Professional Skills Centre (PSC) for the students to train on.
Stephen Concluded “The first cohort of Ce-Tech recruits are now fully integrated into the commercial catering workplace and gaining valuable experience in the vast range of equipment to be installed and maintained. Ce-Tech have now sent their second cohort of new recruits who are currently working their way through the on-line MLP training course.”
Gary Hood Managing Director of CE Tech spoke about the course and its benefits. “The MLP course has been extremely beneficial to CE-Tech allowing us to bring new people into the business who would not have been considered otherwise. The importance of this is that while we continue to provide service to clients like the NHS we will require more gas trained engineers in the future as the country begins to unlock. Without this MLP we could not sustain the business we have let alone make clear plans for future employment.”
