South Eastern Regional College (SERC) student Ryan Gibson has grown his passion for Performing Arts during his progression from the Level 3 Diploma to the HND course, setting him on track for university.

Ryan, (20) from Belfast, says, “I did my GCSEs at Lagan College. When thinking about options after school, I had been considering going to Belfast Met, but after seeing a post on Facebook about SERC’s new SPACE building, I decided to have a look around. I really liked what I saw, and after reading about the Level 3 Performing Arts course, this persuaded me to apply. I have since completed the course and am now in my second year of the Performing Arts HND.”

He continues, “What I have enjoyed about the HND course is that we get to explore a lot of different styles and have the opportunity to be creative during projects and performances. I would rate my experience very highly as I have made so many good memories and a lot of great friends. My confidence, communication, and leadership skills, along with my ability to work with others, have improved, helping me come closer to mastering the craft of acting.”

Of SERC staff Ryan says, “My lecturers have been unbelievable, and are very well trained. Steven Lee in particular has been a huge influence on me. He has helped me improve my acting skills and overcome my greatest weaknesses which were diction and scripting techniques. Another lecturer who has been great is Sarah Collyer, she has helped me learn how to move and dance, which has been amazing. I have also found learning support to be a massive help, particularly with my autism. They made sure I didn’t feel alone and that I was supported during my time here.”

Addressing potential applicants, Ryan says, “If you are a trained or aspiring actor wanting to do more, SERC has the perfect environment for you. Not only will the tutors help you develop your skills and strengthen your weaknesses, but you will also have access to  amazing theatre facilities, enabling you to do so many things.”

He adds “I always have my mind open to possibilities, but right now I am interested in going to the University of Sunderland which SERC have a contract with, to continue my interests in acting. The University of Salford and the University of Liverpool are also other options which I am considering for a degree. Going to SERC was a great decision, and I am looking forward to seeing what the future has in store for me.”
