South Eastern Regional College’s Students’ Union ‘Refreshers’ week hosted recently at Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards campuses, served as a great opportunity to remind students of the opportunities available through the college and the local community, which are beneficial to them and their well-being.
The SU held fairs in Downpatrick, Bangor and Lisburn featuring many exhibitors including Praxis Care, Caremark, Cancer Focus, the Link Centre, Deafblind, SOS Bus, Guide Dogs, YMCA, Royal Air Force, Education Authority, Barnardo’s, Beeches Residential Home and SERC’s Student Carers.
The college’s Student Finance and Careers teams were also available for drop-in sessions to help give advice to any student who may have needed it.
Along with the on campus fairs, a separate Refreshers event took place in Newtownards that featured guest speakers from Inspire, Link Centre, and North Down and Ards Community Association.
Speaking about Refreshers Catherine Shipman, Student Engagement Manager at SERC, said “The start of the new year presented us with a great opportunity to welcome our students back on campus and help them to reconnect with one another and their local communities. This year we focused on showcasing volunteering opportunities to help our students give back, build their confidence, skills and to support their wellbeing. We are so grateful to our community partners and all our exhibitors for helping make our Refreshers week such a success.
Catherine concluded “SERC’s Students’ Union plays a significant part in student life here at the College. We encourage students to get involved and avail of the activities and opportunities on offer which complement not only their studies, but also their wellbeing whilst they are here and often when they progress to employment or further studies.”
