Reception Recognises WorldSkills Participants

The College hosted a reception to recognise SERC apprentices and students who took part in the recent WorldSkillsUK finals.
The apprentices and students, accompanied by parents and family who were joined by their tutors and mentors and members of the College Management Team. Ken Webb, SERC Principal and Chief Executive, welcomed the guests to an afternoon tea reception in the Linen Room at the College’s Lisburn Campus.
Marija Kuzaite, a Level 3 Patisserie and Confectionary student, was awarded a Gold Medal in the Confectionery and Patisserie competition; Alexander Wallace, a Level 3 Fire and Security apprentice employed by BPS, took Gold in the inaugural Fire Detection and Alarm System competition; and Eimear McCarthy, a Level 3 Hospitality with Events student, was awarded a Silver Medal.
The five students and apprentices from SERC who were finalists in the UK wide WorldSkills competitions also included Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery apprentice David Fairley (employed by Heaney Interiors) who competed in Joinery, and Level 3 Plumbing apprentice Andrew Reain, (who was unable to attend the reception), employed by Vincent Cunningham Contractors who competed in the Plumbing competition. Both young men narrowly missed out on medals, coming 4th and 5th respectively in the UK.
At the reception, Ken congratulated all the apprentices and students on their success remarking on the dedication and commitment necessary for competing at national level. He thanked their tutors and mentors for their teaching and guidance and parents and family for supporting the young people in their endeavours.
A total of 45 competing students from the local Further Education sector took home 27 medals 10 of which were Gold.
