SERC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport student Rebekah Whiteside, (20), from Portavogie, is studying to open pathways to a new career.

Rebekah completed her GCSEs at Regent House School before going into employment. Later, she decided she wanted a career change and decided to come to SERC to study and to get her qualifications. Rebekah determined SERC was right for her, after doing her own research online on courses available to her and seeing that her local SERC Bangor campus was close to home.

On her course, Rebakah comments, “I like the physical training you do as part of the course – there's a lot of exercise in the form of sports like basketball and badminton, which naturally improves your health and fitness a lot by playing them. As for the coursework, the tutors help you through each part of it which makes the topics easy to understand. We learn about sports leadership in which we must teach a class about a chosen sport and instruct the class on how to play it, and we also learn about how to properly perform fitness tests on people too.

“The sports facilities are great; we have all the equipment we need for our fitness tests and classes - it’s great to be close to Ward Park too as we can host sports days out there.”

On what she wants to do after her course, Rebakah comments, “After completing this course, I’ll have a lot of options open to me, as this course will ensure I have a level 3 qualification. That means progression to university is an option, but I can also further develop my education in sport too at SERC. I’m not sure what I want to do at the moment but it’s great to have so many pathways open to me.”

Rebekah concluded, “I would absolutely recommend SERC; it’s been a great way to get back into learning. Definitely come to an open day and see if SERC is right for you.”
