Quarantine Care: Tips for Natural Beauty

Now more than ever, hygiene and self-care are very important; with this in mind, the SERC Beauty Lecturers have banded together to give you some tips and tutorials on giving yourself some quality quarantine care. This week is focused on natural beauty tips.
There are many ways to improve your beauty in a natural and healthy way:
Basics
Most of us don’t drink enough water but getting your eight glasses a day could improve your skin. Try to have a full glass before bed, as going for a long period without water can leave you with lacklustre skin. Stimulant such as tea/coffee/alcohol are diuretics thus having a dehydrating effect on the skin.
Lack of sleep leaves skin looking dull, so save on serums by ensuring you have a good night’s sleep. Adding this to your beauty regime helps to cut back on skincare steps and the extra make-up needed to cover dark circles.
Exfoliation/ Scrub
Sugar is a natural exfoliator which helps to get rid of dead and dry skin on your face or body. Mix a tablespoon of sugar (finer white for face and courser demerara for body) with a tablespoon of honey. In gentle circular movements, massage your face. Leave the product on for 10 minutes then rinse it off with water. While sugar will help remove dead skin, honey will cleanse your clogged pores and leave skin soft. Alternatively, you could use ground almonds and coconut oil mixed together for a face exfoliant and use coffee grounds mixed in with your shower gel for body exfoliation.
Anti-Ageing
Temporary relief of fine lines and wrinkles can be achieved by mashing up a banana and adding a teaspoon of olive oil. Mix it well and apply the pack on your face. Leave it on for 15 minutes and wash it off with water. Bananas are loaded with potassium, zinc and Vitamins A, B, C and E, which helps in reversing signs of ageing. On the other hand, olive oil is a natural moisturizer which will help your skin in absorbing the pack better.
If your skin is tired, lacks lustre or is developing darker age spots, this pack is ideal for you. Whisk egg white in a bowl and add a tablespoon of lemon/lime juice, apply it on your face or back of the hands where sun damage has occurred. Apply with the help of a cotton ball. Keep it on your face or specific area for 20 minutes, until it dries off, and wash your face with water. The presence of proteins in eggs will tighten your sagging skin and lemon/lime juice will gently fade away spots and blemishes.
Skin Brightening/Rejuvenating
Squeeze out some grape juice, either green or black grapes. For added benefit, mix a few drops of rose water in it. Mix the liquid well and apply it on your face. Grapes are loaded with antioxidants and will help in restoring the elasticity of your face. Rose water will give a cooling effect and will also remove excess oil from your face.
Eye Mask
Grab some green tea bags from the cupboard, soak them and then chill in the fridge for the perfect budget eye mask.
