South Eastern Regional College (SERC) is urging parents to ensure their children get appropriate advice so they are on the right pathway for future courses or employment.

South Eastern Regional College (SERC) is urging parents to ensure their children get appropriate advice so they are on the right pathway for future courses or employment.

Heather McKee, Director of Strategic Planning, Quality and Support at SERC said, “It is really important that young people choose the right course that is going to get them to their next step, whether that is further studies or employment. It is important that they know the qualifications and levels they need to be able to move on.

She added, “Without the right information and guidance, students can sometimes end up feeling locked out of the jobs and pathways that they want to follow. But students should know that there is support and guidance available to help them plan the way to their goals. The top priority for SERC Careers Advisors - who offer independent, impartial advice - is to help find the options that will work for them.

Heather continued, “It may be that they need to pick up maths or English and in order to do that they could follow a different course to get those qualifications under their belt before getting onto the course they wanted to join in the first instance. It’s not about changing their goals but perhaps changing the timeline. In the meantime, they are picking up those essential qualifications along with transversal skills which will be important in the future.”

Lissa Dyer’s daughter Megan is planning to come to SERC this year. Lissa said,“The support my daughter and I received via email and social media [from the Careers Team] has helped us greatly and relieved some anxiety - we have a plan in place for September. Thank you to all for the great support which has been much appreciated.”

SERC are continuing to enrol for full-time further and higher education courses and prospective students are welcome to call into the College’s Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn or Newtownards Campuses, from 9.00 – 4.00pm from 1 – 3 September or 9.00am to 3.00pm on Friday 4 September.
