SERC would like to give a big thank you to Anne Hunter, Millisle, a friend of staff member Janet McNeil, who has been helping in a great way during these difficult times by sewing masks for those working in health care settings.

Anne is the right woman for the job with years of tailoring experience to her name. When Anne left school, she started working for KEE-MUR Fashions in Pound Street, Newtownards which later moved to the Comber Road in the town in the early 70s. At first, they made tweed skirts, before progressing to Corporate and School Uniforms for many schools around Northern Ireland.

Before retiring, Anne worked for Winnie Magee Coat Maker in Comber, who made Designer Proofed Linen Coats. However, retiring did not stop Anne from keeping up her passion of tailoring. Having to work from home due to personal circumstances, Anne transformed her garage into a workshop. It is from this lovely garden workshop that Anne has been working away, helping those in need of homemade personal protective equipment (PPE) in the form of masks.

Anne has been busy while staying at home and has made 66 masks in just two days using material donated by Thomas Kelly & Co Ltd in Ballynahinch. These masks have been distributed by SERC to staff at the Mater Hospital and at Abbeyfield and Wesley care homes.

Anne is now moving on to making scrubs, another highly sought-after item during these unprecedented times, and all while doing it with a smile!
