After switching from Belfast Metropolitan College to SERC, student Alexander Bittle has found the perfect route to unlocking a potential career in networking, through the HND Computing (Software and Games Development) course at the College's Bangor Campus.

Alexander, (23) from Newtownards says, “After I finished my GCSEs at Campbell College in 2015, I originally went on to Belfast Met to do A-Levels in Maths, Business and Economics. I ended up not completing the course, and while I was looking to find something else, my friend recommended SERC. I decided to look into my options, and after speaking to some tutors, I enrolled to do my A-Levels again in 2019, this time in Psychology, Sociology and Physics at SERC's Bangor Campus. I studied both at the College and online during Covid, but from the get-go, I realised that SERC had great support systems in place, making my experience a good one.”

He adds, “At the end of my A-Levels, I achieved AAB grades and decided to stay at SERC for an HND in Computing. I am currently in my second year of the course and have enjoyed all the study units I have done so far, particularly the networking side, which is something I would be interested in doing as a career in the future. My tutors Ryan Major and Veronica Tate are very nice people and have definitely been a great help to me throughout the course. The tutors really care about you as an individual, rather than just being completely focused on your academic performance, which is something I have found very encouraging about studying here. I have been supported in a friendly learning environment, and which certainly means I feel under a lot less pressure.”

Speaking on his involvement in College clubs, Alexander says, “At the moment, I am a member of Project Space, and have been doing a work experience internship through the College with a company called Sentireal. The company is based in Belfast and focuses on Augmented and Virtual Reality technology. I reached out to the company last year to test their VR software called ‘Immersonal’, which I have been using for my project to create a virtual tour of the college’s SPACE building. So far, it has been a great experience and I look forward to seeing the final result.”

Addressing future students, Alexander says, “I would definitely recommend SERC to anyone who is considering continuing further or higher education. SERC is a fantastic place to learn, and whatever area you are interested in, you will be supported in achieving your goals. I am looking forward to finishing my HND, and hope to go on to complete the top up degree in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics. I think this course will be a fantastic opportunity to build on my skills, and give me a deeper insight into networking, which is the area of this industry that interests me for a future career.”

Find out how you can unlock your future with SERC. Come along to our Open Evening for Full Time students from 4.00pm – 7.00pm on Wednesday 8 March 2023 at the College’s Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses.
