October is National Cholesterol Month, and the aim is to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a healthy cholesterol level.

Cholesterol is a blood fat which plays a vital role in how all our cells work. It is also needed for digestion, to make Vitamin D, and to make hormones which keep your bones strong. However, too much cholesterol clogs your arteries and can lead to health problems, including heart disease.

A cholesterol check involves a simple blood test which you can get done at your pharmacy or your GP. A healthcare professional can also work out your risk of developing heart disease and stroke over the next 10 years using a risk assessment calculator. You can also work out your own risk of developing heart disease over the next 10 years with the NHS Heart Age Tool

Being active is a major part of looking after your cholesterol levels and keeping your heart healthy.  To find out the benefits of exercise, click here

There are several foods which are not only healthy but can also actively help you lower your cholesterol too. Cutting down on foods with saturated fat in them and replacing them with foods with unsaturated fats in them is a great way to lower your cholesterol.
