As winter is now upon us, many of us will have been caught off guard by the recent icy conditions which present slipping hazards. To help keep us safe from injury, the NHS has shared the secret of how get a peng ‘win’ over the winter weather this season.

Advising us to ‘walk like a penguin,’ the NHS outlines five simple steps to reduce the risk of slipping in the dangerous conditions:

  • Bend slightly and keep your knees loose
  • Point your feet out slightly
  • Extend your arms at your sides
  • Walk flat-footed, taking short steps
  • Keep your centre of gravity over your feet

By following these steps, you will have a lesser chance of injury this winter. Try to prevent carrying a heavy bag which will cause your weight to unevenly distribute, and avoid icy pavements if possible.

In the event of a slip, trip or fall which requires medical attention, but is not urgent, please call 111 for advice or visit your local Minor Injuries Unit.
