Here at SERC we are keen to promote internal colleagues to allow staff the opportunity to get to know each other and put a face to the name, particularly due to the size and scope of SERC. With this in mind, “Meet your Colleagues” is a fun Q and A exercise to help raise awareness of people’s roles within SERC and allows you to get to know more about your fellow colleagues.
This week’s, “Meet Your Colleague” features Stephen Devlin. Stephen is a technician in IT with the School of Engineering and Computing.
1. What does your role at SERC involve?
My role within SERC includes managing the School of Computing's Cloud Network resources. This includes student websites, students’ apps and students databases. I also assist with student projects for programming, Networking and Games Development.
2. Tell us a bit about your background?
I previously worked as a network administrator for a small company and school. Then I decided to get certified and completed my Microsoft Certified Server Associate and began studying at SERC. I completed my HND in Computing and Systems Development just under 3 years ago and began working in SERC shorty after graduation.
3. What 3 words best describe you?
Motivated, enthusiastic and jovial.
4. What do you like to do outside of work?
I really enjoy learning new things that will better myself both outside of work and in work, such as working with networks and servers in my homelab. I love to pick up new hobbies and I am keen musician and gamer! Did I mention socializing? I LOVE being around friends and family!
5. If you could swap jobs for a day who would it be and why?
If I could swap jobs for the day I would have to swap with Elon Musk. Best job ever, getting to work with the smartest minds in Tech, play with rockets, electric cars, send stuff into space and change the world. Fantastic!
6. List 3 items you would want with you if you were stranded on a deserted island?
- Acoustic Guitar
- Burritos
- Bottle of Sriracha Hot Sauce
7. What is your favourite film and why?
The Pianist – The movie makes me really appreciate how much we have and how much we take for granted. Watching Wladyslaw Szpilman lose his family in World War 2 is heart-breaking and makes me extremely thankful for everything I have today.
8. Where do you most want to travel, but have never been?
I would love to travel around Asia. I have a real passion for Asian food and would love to travel and experience the street food culture.
