NI Apprenticeship Week 2022- Connor Dobbin- HLA Mechatronics

The idea of sitting through lectures for four years as a full-time university student didn’t appeal to SERC apprentice Connor Dobbin (22), who instead wanted to be more hands on and learn, train and work his way towards a career as an engineer through an apprenticeship.

Connor from Bangor is currently employed as an apprentice by Roche Diagnostics and through his apprenticeship is studying towards a Foundation Degree in Mechatronic Engineering. He spoke about his academic journey so far, “I completed my GCSEs’ and then went on to complete A Levels in Geography, Environmental Technology and ICT achieving all A to C grades at St. Columbanus College.

“After completing my A-Levels, I made the decision not to progress on to university, as I didn't want to sit through university lectures for a further 4 years. At that point I knew I wanted to get into work as quick as possible as I am very hands on. I therefore decided to go down the apprenticeship route, obtaining an apprenticeship with Roche Diagnostics.

“My role within Roche is to maintain, service, fix and even install/de-install most of the diagnostic laboratory equipment in Northern Ireland, including chemistry/immunology analysers and primary tissue staining equipment.”

Speaking about his time at SERC, Connor said “My experience at SERC has been fantastic- the level of teaching and support has been brilliant, and I cannot fault it. Of course, it was challenging at times, considering I was completing the course during a global pandemic, but the support and guidance was always there.

“I would 100% recommend the Mechatronic Engineering course at SERC, as there are so many possibilities coming out of this course, including the option to gain the full degree after. There are so many different types of apprentices on the course which reflects the avenues available for the future.”

Connor added “University is not for everyone.  Whilst studying for my A- levels at school, it was always expected of you to go onto university and obtain a degree. However, there are so many other options, I strongly recommend exploring alternative avenues including SERC.”

Talking about his future, Connor concluded: “The plan, as it has always been, is to complete my 4-year Apprenticeship with Roche Diagnostics, with the ultimate aim of gaining a full-time position as a Technical Service Engineer. Over the last month I had the opportunity to apply for an open position for this exact role in only my 3rd year. I was successful in my application and have since moved into a new role as an Associate Technical Services Engineer.”
