After recently completing his Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Business at South Eastern Regional College, alumni Matthew Jackson (18), from Ballyward, has been hired by his placement provider and is now looking forward to starting his career.

Matthew completed his GCSEs at Rathfriland High School before enrolling at SERC. While attending school, Matthew found that he really enjoyed studying GCSE Business Studies and decided to further his studies in the subject after completing his GCSEs. Matthew comments, “I chose SERC to study Business Studies after my GCSEs, because my local SERC campus was easy to travel to and I was impressed by the facilities I saw and information I got after going to an open evening at the Lisburn campus.”

On his course, Matthew says, “You learn about lots of different areas of business, like finance, market research and business decision-making. The aspect of the course I enjoyed the most was the tutors. They were all nice to the students and made the content of the course very easy to learn using a variety of methods, including presentations and quizzes to test our knowledge on the course topics. They were more than happy to go through information as many times as needed to make sure everyone was on the same page and learnt the information.

“One of our units involved a work placement which I got do at an estate agent. My placement gave me great experience in handling finances, employee management, and learning about how to do business deals with other people and companies. Since recently completing my course, the estate agents decided to hire me and now I am fully employed by them.”

Matthew concluded, “I would one hundred percent recommend SERC. SERC is an absolutely great environment to learn in, you will always get the help you need there. There are so many resources to take advantage of, including the canteen and library. Each campus feels very inclusive to LGBTQ people and there are Student’s Union officers dedicated to helping them. There are even student clubs to join like the dungeons & dragons club, which was great fun. Overall, it was amazing to study at SERC.”
