Local Men’s Shed Members Enjoy Taste of SERC

SERC’s Downpatrick Campus recently hosted a course taster evening for members of local community group The Men’s Shed in Downpatrick, Rowallane and Slieve Croob.

The event, which was also open to the public, offered an opportunity for participants to explore subjects such as engineering, woodwork and computing. Staff from the College’s Careers team were also on hand to offer information about part-time courses.

Paul Walsh, SERC Campus Manager (Learning Support and Pastoral Care) at Downpatrick said, “We work with many groups and organisations throughout the local community to ensure everyone has access to programmes at SERC.  The taster evening was a fantastic way of bringing community groups and members of the public, who may have been out of education for a while, into the College to help them develop new interests and perhaps reconnect with education and learning.

He added, “I would like to thank Katrina Hynds, Ellen Brennan and Priscilla McAlinden, District Electoral Area (DEA) Co-ordinators, for their continued support and assistance with organising and promoting this event.”

Katrina Hynds DEA coordinator for Downpatrick said, “Newry Mourne and Down District Council DEA Coordinators were delighted that SERC were able to host an event tailored to members of The Men’s Shed groups.  We have had great feedback from our members who might not have taken the steps to find out what is available at the local College.   This way, they have been in the building to see the state-of-the-art facilities, met some of the team and have found out about the range of courses on offer which might be of interest to them.”

SERC are hosting part-time open evenings, 4.00pm – 8.00pm on Wednesday 5 June at Bangor, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards Campuses.  Enrol now and transform your future with a part-time course.
