LGBT+ History Month, is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the experiences of the LGBT+ community and celebrate its history. In the UK, the event takes place in February and every year there is a new theme to explore and a new focus for the event.

The overarching aim of LGBT+ History Month is to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public. The organisers want to do this in a range of ways, including:

  • Raising awareness and advancing education on the matters most affecting the LGBT+ community.
  • Increasing the visibility of LGBT+ people, including their history, lives and life experiences in schools, educational institutions, workplaces and community spaces.
  • Endeavouring to make the world safer for all LGBT+ communities.
  • Promoting the welfare of LGBT+ people, ensuring the education system in the UK recognises and enables people to achieve their full potential and contribute significantly to society.

As part of LGBTQ+ History month, the Students’ Union ran an event on 6 February. Two representatives from the Rainbow project, Leo & Chloe facilitated a workshop in the history of AIDS/HIV in the UK.

The Rainbow Project is a health organisation that works to improve the physical, mental & emotional health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ people and their families in Northern Ireland.

LGBTQ+ Training for Staff

On Wednesday 6 March at 1.30pm, Cara Friends will be offering a 1-hour online training session for staff to increase the awareness of the LGBTQI+ community and the issues this community faces, with a focus on ensuring participants have an understanding of the language and terminology that is applicable to LGBTQI+ people.

This will then be followed by a 30 mins Q&A session. This is a great opportunity to discuss language, best practice and offers a space to ask questions in a safe and constructive environment.

If you wish to attend, please contact the Learning Academy.
