HRH The Duke of Edinburgh passed away on 9 April 2021.
One of the most enduring legacies of his life must be The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award which was founded by His Royal Highness in 1956. The Award is widely recognised as the world’s leading youth achievement, operating in over 140 countries around the world and part of the extracurricular activities available to every student at SERC.
The Award was designed to challenge young people between the ages of 14 – 24 to endeavour and achieve across a wide variety of active interests, enabling them to service their communities, experience adventure and to develop and learn outside the classroom.
Since SERC was presented with a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Operating Licence, 450 students have participated in the Duke of Edinburgh’s/Gaisce – The President’s Award Joint Award. In 2019/20, 200 of our students donated 2288 hours of voluntary activity which equates to a social value of £9,952.
To celebrate The Duke’s inspiring impact on generations of young people, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards team are asking anyone who’s been involved in the Awards across the decades to help build a collection of stories to inspire the next generation of young people, including current and future students of SERC, to begin their Duke of Edinburgh journey at Share your DofE Memory.
