Students at SERC have the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities outside of study, including becoming a student rep through the Students Union, joining a club or society to make new friends, completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award, setting up your own business, and more.

One great opportunity student can take advantage of at SERC is the SERC Entrepreneurs Club, which is overseen by the EEE team. It gives SERC students and alumni access to a wide range of support for setting up and running student companies and independent businesses. This includes 1-to-1 mentoring with one of the College’s dedicated Innovation Advisors, access to exclusive resources, trading opportunities, events, and expert advice from the SERC Entrepreneur in Residence, Terence Brannigan. From 2022 to 2023, 85 SERC students/student groups launched or operated a business, with over half receiving support from the EEE team.

At SERC you can develop enterprising and entrepreneurial skills and ambitions with support from this award-winning team. They have received several accolades over the last academic year, including The Edge Award for Excellence in Real World Learning and a Highly Commended in the OCN Advancing Learning through Innovation Award. EEE Deputy Head Lizzie Buick was highly commended in the OCN Inspiring Tutor/Teacher of the Year category and the whole EEE team is currently competing in the finals of Pearson’s National Teaching Awards for FE Team of the Year. Last year, their work on a sustainable fashion competition and exhibition as part of their Eco Committee events was recognised in the shortlist for the European Week for Waste Reduction Awards held in Dublin.

Joseph Chainey, member of SERC student company Wrin Inkubus, comments, “After the Enterprise team approached me at the first festive market, they have all been so supportive and helpful. They helped me develop my brand and gave me the advice I needed on future courses and careers. I'm so glad I got to work with them, and I look forward to working with them in the future.”

Natasha Lloyd, SERC Senior Innovation Advisor, comments, “It is a privilege to work with our creative and ambitious students on turning their ideas into reality. It has been wonderful to see the many successes they have had, from grant awards to competition placings and sellout market stalls – I am so proud of them and look forward to meeting the new cohorts this year!”
