International Day of Persons with Disabilities is on 3 December 2023, and is a global celebration of the rights and achievements of people with a disability.

Disabilities come in many forms, and it is important that attention is given to each of them. Not all disabilities are immediately apparent, such as mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others. International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a great opportunity for everyone to help make our world more inclusive for everyone with a disability.

The College has a 3-year contract with AccessAble, who provide accessible information on SERC’s estate to visitors, staff and students. This gives disabled people, carers, and those who just want to know a little more about accessibility, the information to decide if a SERC campus is suitable for them. The guides include facts, figures and photographs to help people plan their visit and to anticipate whether their accessibility needs will be met. To access the site, click here

SERC has gained Levels 1 and 2 of the Disability Confident Committed Scheme which is valid for 3 years. As a Disability Confident Employer, we have committed to:

  • Ensuring our recruitment process is inclusive and accessible.
  • Communicating and promoting job vacancies.
  • Offering an interview to disabled people who meet the minimum criteria for the job they’ve applied for.
  • Anticipating and providing reasonable adjustments on campuses for disabled people as required.
  • Supporting any existing employee who acquires a disability or long-term health condition, enabling them to stay in work.
