Interior Design Information Session

SERC is hosting an Interior Design Information Session 11am – 3pm on Thursday 16 June at the College’s Downpatrick Campus.

Course tutor Sharon Castles said, “Our drop-in information session is for people interested in the ONC Level 2 Award in Interior Design, which starts in September at the Downpatrick Campus.  There will be the opportunity to meet current students, ask questions about the course and see the type of projects that students undertake throughout the year, providing learners with the skills and design practices needed for a range of roles in the industry.”

She added, “The course covers the main elements to consider for interior design, including creating plans and elevations and mood boards, scale and spatial planning, colour theory and design, historical development, ideas and trends, lighting products and plans. The course has a hands-on element, with students getting the opportunity to work on design projects as well as built-in preparation for employment in the creative and cultural industries. This is a fantastic starting point for everyone who loves interiors and would like to create dream rooms for themselves or for others."

“Another exciting part of the course is our student enterprise HomeWorks, which gives students the experience of working on a live brief for fellow students, staff and clients outside the College as part of our Project Based Learning.  This means students have the experience of taking a design brief from start to completion, including documenting the job for pricing and construction.”

Lynne McCabe, from Dromore, returned to SERC to complete a Level 2 Award in Interior Design. She said, “I run two guest houses, Ralph’s in Moira and Lisnacurran in Dromore, so interiors are an important part of what I do for my business. Coming back to do the course has increased my confidence and equipped me with new skills and experience, which I am already putting to use for work on a new guest house I am currently designing called Arthur’s in Moira.”

Fellow student Noreen Kelly, from Hilltown said, “I just love to try something new, so when I heard about the Interior Design course, I thought I would like to give it a go. Taking on the course was something I wanted to do for myself for my own interest. I have learnt so much and it has been an enjoyable and challenging course.” She added, “There is a real mix of students and age groups on the course but since we are all interested in interiors, we are learning from each other and sharing ideas which has been great. I would certainly recommend finding a course you are interested in and giving it a go to upskill or just for your own development.”

There are no formal entry requirements and prior knowledge of interior design is not required. However, learners must be at least 16 years old. The Level 2 Award offers progression to the OCN Level 3 Award in Interior Design which is also available at SERC.   Apply now!
