Not everyone knows exactly what they want to do following school but, for Josh Hanna (18) from Hillsborough, the road from school took him directly to SERC and an apprenticeship dedicated to keeping heavy vehicles on the move.

Josh said, “I had planned to come to SERC following school and knew that the Heavy Vehicle Apprenticeship would be the best course for me.   My father’s business is SC Hanna in Hillsborough, so vehicles have been a big interest for me for as long as I can remember."

Josh, a second year Level 2 Heavy Vehicle apprentice, is employed by Hill Road Commercial in Loughbrickland.   He said, “I like the variety of going to work and going to SERC. There is great camaraderie in the course and, generally, we all help each other out.  It’s also good to hear about the range of vehicles we have all been working on in the workplace. The heavy vehicle theory is backed up through learning on the job, in my case, from four fully qualified and experienced mechanics."

He continued, “College is a bit more relaxed and doesn’t feel as strict as school, but you’re responsible for your learning too, so you have to put the effort in every day.”

As for future plans, Josh said, “I am planning to progress to the Level 3 Apprenticeship and perhaps join the family business at some stage." Visit www.serc.ac.uk/NI-Apprenticeship-Week-2022 to unlock your future #BetterOffAtSERC.
