Hope Brown (25) had set her sights on a career as an architect, and was studying towards her masters in architecture when she had a change of heart and looked to reskill and retrain at SERC for a career in which she could help people.

Hope from Newtownards currently studies the Level 4 HNC in Social and Community Work. Speaking about her decision to retrain Hope said, “During the pandemic, I desired a role in which I could be directly involved in helping people within my local community during this time of struggle for many people, especially those most vulnerable in society. I took on the role of Personal Assistant to multiple service users which involved helping to care and support adults with learning disabilities in their home and in their local communities.

“I found the work and my role to be highly rewarding and I deeply enjoyed my experience of working with families and various other support services involved to promote positive change for the individuals . I loved it so much I am now on a completely new career path studying and become a social worker.”

Talking about her time at the College and her experience so far Hope said, “My experience of the course and SERC has been excellent. There is so much information and staff on hand to ensure students’ needs are met. The College helps students in a number of ways - ensuring course content and learning outcomes are met, assignment submissions are on time, IT support is on hand when needed, Career and advice on progression, and there is student mental health promotion and consideration.”

“My fellow students on the course are all very friendly and we all look out for each other, checking in with regular texts and arranging nights out. Overall, my experience of the course has been brilliant.”

Hope concluded by saying, “My course provides a foundation of knowledge for a range of professionals within the social care sector, and I would highly recommend the course whether you’re hoping to progress to university or gain confidence and understanding as a support worker, carer, or any other social and community work role.”

“If you are considering any course at SERC I would highly recommend going for it. The environment and support SERC offers is inclusive, comprehensive and you will have a great time learning with your fellow students and tutors, online and in class.”
