We would like to wish SERC alumnus Rhys McClenaghan the best of luck as he prepares to compete in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships 2021 in his specialist Pommel Horse event.

Rhys isn’t long removed from competing in the Pommel Horse finals at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which was the first Olympic appearance for the former BTEC Level 3 Sport Student. The Newtownards native has brought great pride to Northern Irish and Irish gymnastics in recent years, winning Gold for NI in the 2018 Commonwealth games and in 2019 becoming the first Irish gymnast to win a medal in the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.

The World Championships will take place from the 18 October to 24 October in Kitakyushu Japan. Rhys will be vying to add another World Championship medal to his growing list of accomplishments.

Lynda Robinson SERC Deputy Head of School, Applied Science, Sport and Access to Education, said “We are immensely proud of Rhys and all that he’s accomplished so far in his career. A fantastic Pommel Horse competitor Rhys continually shows why he’s one of the best in the world, and I know he will perform as valiantly as ever in these World Championships. I wish him all the best in the upcoming competition”
