Amy Brown Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies

Amy Brown, (19), from Banbridge, completed her A-Levels at Dromore High School, before progressing to South Eastern Regional College (SERC) to complete Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies at the College’s Lisburn Campus.

Amy said, “We had lots of guest speakers at school who gave us information about courses we could do after A-Levels and one of the speakers was from SERC, which is where I heard about the Foundation Degree.   I did a little bit of further research on the website, and I knew it was what I wanted to do.

She added, “I really like the Foundation Degree set up as we are in SERC two days a week and on placement for two days over the duration of the two-year course.  I was lucky enough to secure a placement at Ballydown Primary School near Banbridge. Last year, I was with primary three and this year I am with their nursery unit, so I have gained experience as a classroom assistant and a nursery assistant. The role is full-on, as you are helping set up activities and getting involved in everything with the children from when they arrive at school until they leave."

“I love the two days at college, as you are learning all the theory and then you get to apply it to what you are doing on work placement each week.   This format really reinforces everything you are learning throughout the course.   As the course is validated by QUB, we also have access to the library facilities there, and my class took a trip to Queens to familiarise ourselves with the campus at the start of the year.

“On successful completion of the course I will be eligible to progress to the BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Studies at Stranmillis University College, part of QUB.  My long-term ambition is to become a primary school teacher."

Amy concluded, “I would encourage anyone interested in a career in this area to consider the Foundation Degree.  There is great variety in the placements settings you can undertake to achieve your qualification and there is a clear pathway to the full degree on successful completion.”
