EXCELLENCE AWARDS NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED!


At SERC we feel it is important to give recognition to students who exemplify excellence, celebrating their achievements, their impact, and their contributions both academically and in their extra-curricular activities. We also feel it is important to recognise our staff who transform the lives of many aspiring professionals and help them on their path to their chosen careers. The College’s 2023 Excellence Awards will give us the chance to recognise and celebrate the community at SERC, with both returning and new award categories.

All staff are invited to attend the Excellence Award Ceremony, the dates for the awards are as follows:

  • 21 March 2023 – Lisburn Sports Hall- Lisburn and Ballynahinch campuses
  • 23 March 2023 – Bangor Sports Hall- Bangor, Newtownards and Holywood campuses
  • 30 March 2023 – Downpatrick Sports Hall – Downpatrick and Newcastle campuses

The award categories and the information for nomination criteria and forms are below:

FE Student of the Year

FE Student of the Year will be awarded to one student per school, per campus, as well as one overall campus winner. Nominees for FE student of the Year should demonstrate or have demonstrated:

  • A positive contribution to their class
  • Good attendance
  • Good initiative
  • Collaborating well with staff and fellow students

Nominations can also include any other supportive information that demonstrates the student’s exemplary year of excellence, such as their commitment to learning in the face of a challenge or enhancing the student experience.

Apprenticeship Student of the Year

Apprenticeship Student of the Year will be awarded to one student per school, per campus, as well as one overall campus winner. Nominees for Apprenticeship Student of the Year should demonstrate or have demonstrated:

  • A positive contribution to their class
  • Good attendance
  • Good initiative Collaborating well with staff and fellow students
  • Good contribution their employers work force
  • Good feedback from their employer

Nominations can also include any other supportive information that demonstrates the student’s exemplary year of excellence, such as their commitment to learning in the face of a challenge or enhancing the student experience.

Skills for Life and Work Student of the Year

Nominees for Skills for Life and Work Student of the Year should demonstrate or have demonstrated:

  • A positive contribution to their class
  • Good attendance
  • Good initiative
  • Collaborating well with staff and fellow students
  • Good contribution during their work placement
  • Good feedback from their placement employer

Nominations can also include any other supportive information that demonstrates the student’s exemplary year of excellence, such as their commitment to learning in the face of a challenge or enhancing the student experience.

Trainee Student of the Year

Nominees for Trainee Student of the Year should demonstrate or have demonstrated: A positive contribution to their class.

  • Good attendance.
  • Good initiative.
  • Collaborating well with staff and fellow students.

  • Good feedback from their placement employer.

Nominations can also include any other supportive information that demonstrates the student’s exemplary year of excellence, such as their commitment to learning in the face of a challenge or enhancing the student experience.

Students’ Union Class Rep of the Year

This student will be a current elected Class Rep and registered as such with SERC SU. This student will have positively fulfilled their role as a Class Rep by: Successfully representing their peers and programme of study on a local and departmental level through regular attendance at SU Class Rep meetings and programme meetings. They will have made an outstanding effort to communicate, engage and consult with their peers and assured that the student voice was represented to the College.

Students’ Union Officer of the Year

This student will be a current elected Officer on their campus Students’ Union. They will have made a positive change to the student experience at SERC demonstrated by:

  • Developing or contributing to SERCSU campaigns on Equality, Liberation, health and wellbeing or student voice.
  • Developed or supported the formation of clubs, societies, and events on their campus.
  • Represented the student voice on Internal committees such as the Equality Committee, Health and Safety committee or Higher Education Review Board.
  • Is easy to approach and attentive to peers’ needs and comments Is passionate about their role and wants the best experience for students on the course.
  • Has fulfilled their role while balancing family life and studies.

Excellence in Project Work

This student or students will have demonstrated exemplary skills and ability in their project work such as their project-based learning assignments. They will have demonstrated:

  • Great teamwork
  • Problem solving skills
  • Time management
  • Consistent work on their project up until its completion

Entrepreneur of the Year

Our Entrepreneur of the Year will be a student who demonstrates the ability to or is currently excelling in the world of enterprise. They will show excellence in the following categories.

  • Business acumen
  • Innovation
  • Commitment to networking
  • Development of business or business plans

Excellence in Supporting the Student Experience

This award is open to ALL staff at SERC, including academic, including part time lecturing and corporate staff.

This is an award for members of staff who have gone above and beyond to help the student, ensuring they have had a long lasting positive experience whilst studying at South Eastern Regional College.

All staff at SERC contribute towards the student experience and every staff member has an important role in ensuring the success of SERC. This award is to recognise the hard work of all those who exceed expectations to achieve this. This can be any staff member, even if they aren’t associated with a specific school.

Champion for Health and Wellbeing

This is an award for members of staff who have demonstrated a great deal of care for either SERC staff and/or students, through initiatives, work with societies or partnerships, or any other reason that reflects their level of care for the health and wellbeing of those at SERC This can be any staff member, even if they aren’t associated with a specific school.

Colleague of the Year

This award is for a colleague you believe goes above and beyond in their role and enhances the college experience for the students and/or their fellow members of staff. They will have demonstrated tremendous commitment and work ethic, have helped others and contributed positively to the SERC community making them a ‘stand out’ member of staff.

Excellence In Teaching

The College wants to learn about the student experience, specifically how members of the SERC lecturing team have supported them in ensuring they have received a high quality all round educational experience whilst studying with South Eastern Regional College.

What we are looking for in this award is that the lecturer will have:

  • Helped inspire an individual or a group.
  • Gone above and beyond the expectation of their students in order to help the class achieve.
  • Helped a student reach heights they never expected.
  • Helped to make a student or students experience at the college a great and memorable one.

Community Champion of the Year

This award is open to all staff and students at SERC who meet the following criteria:

  • Has volunteered their own time to help their local and college community.
  • Has had a positive impact on their local and college community.
  • Is passionate about helping and having a positive impacts on the lives of others.

Excellence in Innovation

We are seeking nominations for either one person or a team who have worked to deliver business improvements and/or innovations in their role or to the wider College, this can be in any area within the College.

The judging panel will be looking for nominations which showcase extraordinary accomplishments from individuals and/or teams who have made significant impact through innovation and new approaches. We are looking for dynamic players who have been able to innovate and transform their role or the business of SERC.

Team of the Year

We are looking for submissions from departments within SERC who are ‘going that extra mile’ in contributing to SERC’s mission, that the College is recognised as an innovative and entrepreneurial world class education provider.

We are looking for nominations where teams who have demonstrated exceptional teamwork, worked collaboratively, providing solutions which meet SERC’s needs, and exhibiting excellence to achieve SERC’s success.

School Partnership- Post 16 Award

Examples of nominated student's achievements include.

  • Completed course with a specified number of Distinction and Credit Grades.
  • Completed course to a very high standard; nominated/winner of regional or national award – please give details of award.
  • Overall participation on course leading to subsequent employment enhancements.
  • Other merits of achievement which warrant this student to be 'singled-out’.

Examples of nominated student's achievements include.
