Ditch the cling film and make your own beeswax wraps

Plastic water bottles and shopping bags are the two largest plastic waste items.  However, plastic sandwich bags and cling film make up another large proportion. They may keep your lunch fresh, but they are polluting our planet. They are difficult to recycle and are made from harmful chemicals.  As they break down in the environment, small particles make their way into animals’ diets, accumulating in their systems.  Eventually, it will land on our plates through the food chain. They are also harmful to marine animals as they are often mistaken for food.

Did you know, the UK uses over 1.2 billion meters of cling film every year? This is enough cling film to go around the circumference of the world 30 times!

Natural beeswax wraps are a great alternative, they are plastic free, fully compostable and fun to make! They are made from natural cotton sheets and covered with a wax coating. They mould across the top of your containers and food items using the heat from your hands. The great thing about beeswax wraps is they can be used again and again – when looked after correctly they can last for around 10 years! Not to mention they are also so much prettier than cling film and plastic sandwich bags.

Check out our guide below on how to make your own beeswax wraps at home.
